Would you care how old your wedding planner is?

March 2, 2010 - 8:42 am 11 Comments

I’m 19 now and starting the event and wedding planning course at the local university, and I just wanted to know if how old your wedding planner is matters (if you use one) or if you’d just go by how professional they are and if they have the qualifications?
I do have some experiance, planned my first wedding at the age of 15, my cousin was to busy with work so she handed it over to me, I did everything for her, from picking up a tux for her groom, to making sure the cake got to the reception area and I’ve helped brides plan two other weddings since then

Well, to be completely honest, I would want to make sure that my wedding planner was mature enough to handle all of the issues that might come up. I would need someone assertive enough to be able to handle vendors and make negotiations.

It really depends on you and the type of weddings you will be coordinating. You may be able to coordinate some lower budget weddings at first just to get some professional references and to get your name out there. If you have the qualifications, go for it.

I’m a young bride (22) and I am unconventional and would not have a problem with your age. But more traditional people might.

But, it’s all good because you won’t be 19 forever and you are working towards what you want to do.

Serious Advice for wedding planning?

February 28, 2010 - 5:52 am 13 Comments

I am in the process of planning a wedding that will happen on August 18th, 2007. I have the place and some details sketched out. Of course there are books upon books on this subject- but for those of you who have planned a wedding before or are wedding planners what are some practical things I might not find in a book?
Ps. I have the dress, location, caterer, colors, and of course Fiancee’. I am not letting my family determine the wedding plans. It is a medium wedding including 250 invited guests.
Thank you all so much for your advice. As I said I have a lot of things sketched out, (i.e. details of the ceremony, transportation ect.)I’m mostly looking for advice on how to avoide some little known catasrophe’s on the day…like the running shoes under the dress:)
I just wanted to comment one more time on your answers everyone! Thank you again so much however I know websites and places to go for information. I have books upon books and a planner. I have all the details- what I don’t have is practicle advice only learned from experience. I want to know things that I will NOT find in a book or website- something that happened at your wedding or someone elses. Tips like having extra glasses- I really do enjoy all of the feedback but I what needs to be planned…I just wanted some insights to things that I would find anywhere else.:) Thanks!

Well, my glasses broke the morning of our wedding. I advise everyone with corrective lenses to have a backup – extra glasses or contacts. There was no way to get mine fixed that day, and I had no backup. I went through the day kinda blind, and it was nuts.

Opening a wedding store!?

February 26, 2010 - 6:53 am 1 Comment

Hi everyone,

Just been having a huge think lately about where i want to go with my life. I have been doing a bit of event planning and seem to be facinated with weddings lately!

Im wanting to open a wedding store in my small industrial town (about 50,000 people) BUT i will be the only one of the kind, and where there are male workers, there are females marrying them right?!

What im wondering is, we currently have 1 bridal store in my town that sells dresses. Should i do the whole dress thing?.. Im actually thinking of doing the whole deal. I want to do a wedding planning course and offering like the hire of beautiful centre pieces, chair covers, table cloths, naptkins, and more.

My question is this: What do you think would be a good idea to start with? are wedding dresses and coverings two totally different markets that wouldnt gel properly??..

Im thinking like.. a "wedding bar" type thing. one stop shop. They tell me what they want and i arrange it.
Should i start small first and see how i go??

Thoughts..???

I would def. start small first. Perhaps with invitations or linens. The reason I say this, is you could in some way, work with the ONE bridal dress store in your town and offer event invites or announcements too (graduations, babies, engagements, showers etc.). The two of you (business owners), could refer and sort of work together. THEN, as time and money changes things for you, just grow. It takes time, money and passion to do this. So filling a store with dresses (inventory) when there already is one available in your small town, may be hard. Use the other shop for help!! Something that I’m starting is a resale bridal shop online and out of my home. I love fashion forward dresses and designer gowns but in this economy who can afford them? This could also be your angle once you’ve made some $$$ from other avenues like linens, decorations or consulting. Some things to think about:
*what do the brides in your area want/need? (affordability, eco-friendly, luxury, etc)
*do you have a support system? (business mentor, family/friends)

I have a question about wedding planning?

February 24, 2010 - 6:41 am 5 Comments

Hello, I had asked a question a few months ago about telling my parents about me getting married and I mentioned about my fiancée being unemployed…and I received so really good and honest answers and I did appreciate them all and I as of now we have decided to wait until he finds a job. So now I am working still and trying to get in school to be an LPN my goals have not changed and I still love my man. He still wants to give me a wedding. I want to have a wedding still and I have been reading articles about planning a beautiful wedding on a small budget and I have seen these gorgeous weddings and their budget to the most was 7,000 for everything. Since I can’t be a bride yet until my groom-to-be finds a stable job what are some tips that I could use to start saving up for my wedding like for the important stuff like the venue, food, photography, and of course my wedding dress and other small things that I may need for it. I mean I have been reading on that I mean is it a good ideal to get started on saving and you know it won’t be too stressful?
i apreciate the first answer about the nursing and I tried to go for being an RN but for me it was too much and I have to have a medical job to get in the program in Jacksonville Fl I am doing the LPN to have as a stepping stone to see if nursing is what I really want to do and also to get in he field. Thanks but I like the questions so far and I am so for the ideal of being a DIY bride thanks…

we are getting married on 10/10/09 and have had since this past may to plan it… my budget is 3,000 bucks… i have 1800 left… and all i still need to do is, alterations on my dress 130, pay photographer 400 ( good deal!! ) purchase heavy appetizers, alcohol and mixers…. and i think that is about it… so i think i am gonna come in under budget… nice!!! this is how i did it….
we decided to do our wedding at our home – no venue costs
our best man is gifting us the DJ – no DJ costs
my future MIL is having our cake made – saved around 375. she also purchased all the plates and napkins
a friend of a friend is bartending for tips only – no bartender fee
checked with the local college and had the professor recommend a good photography student. she is awesome!! and since she isn’t professional yet, she gave me a great deal and will give me all rights to the pictures ( so i don’t have to go to her for prints )
looked at lots of wedding magazines for decorations and just walked the isles of the local craft stores for ways to make them myself
downloaded coupons for local stores for vases and candles for center pieces
purchased all my tulle online at a great price…
so, needless to say, once you choose a venue, draw a diagram of what you want it to look like and then start picking things up a little at a time… a couple of rolls of ribbon here, some tulle there, etc…

wedding planning?

February 22, 2010 - 7:52 am 6 Comments

im 15 and i finally know what i want to be.
a wedding planner. what do you have to study in college to be one? business? i want to go to spelman so i want to know do they have courses for that.

It’s great to see someone know exactly what they want at your age.
I am not exactly sure about the courses offered at Spelmen. I went to their site and I did see a link for "requesting information". You should send them a request for info.
Some help that I may give is listed below. I hope it is of some help.
Read magazines and on-line articles about wedding planning.
Start checking out every business related to what you want to do. (florists, furniture rentals, bridal gown sales and rentals, tent rentals, wedding/reception halls, etc…)
Prepare yourself in every way you can now. When you do enter in the the wedding planning workforce, you will be so knowledgeable that everyone will want you.
As for learning…
Study books on public speaking, time and people management, negotiation, and sales.
Some of the best authors are Anthony Robbins and Harry Beckwith. I have studied them, and I also suggest them to many of my students.
Good luck. And when things start to get really crazy, and they will, remember the best moments(Like the happiness you brought to a bride.). This will help you in the worst moments.

Wedding Planning Courses?

February 20, 2010 - 9:17 am 1 Comment

If I take a course online and get a certificate to be a wedding planner, can I go to some other place and become certified? I know it’s better to be a certified wedding planner, but not all schools offer it. I was trying to find out if there is a place outside of a school that you can become certified.

There are MANY associations out there for Wedding Planners, that you should seek out for education, networking and industry news. No one, in my opinion, is better than another. You simply have to do your research and pick the one that’s right for you.

Associations:
WPIC (Canada)
ACPWC
AFWPI
ABC

Beyond that, consider Event Management programs through your local college/university. And, always look into non-wedding specific associations such as:

ISES
IFEA
MPI

Good luck!

Is there an event planning (wedding planners) course at Trent University?

February 18, 2010 - 12:12 pm 2 Comments

I want to become a Wedding Planner, and a few years ago while googling what schools I wanted to go to, I found out that Trent University (in Peterborough, ON Canada) has (or had) an event planners course where you graduate with a bridals degree. Is this still there!? The website is very, VERY confusing =[
please help me!

As a wedding planner, you should learn as much as possible about all the details that go into weddings. Gaining skills in the 6 areas below will enhance your ability to help your brides and grooms have the weddings they want. You don’t have to be an expert in these areas but knowing the basics will help you speak intelligently with vendors and increase your value in the eyes of your clients.

Here are the 6 skills:

1) Cake Design and Baking

It takes a lot of expertise to design, bake, fill, frost, decorate and assemble wedding cakes. Taking classes in cake decorating will help you learn some of the basics so you can get an idea of the work it takes to create a wedding cake for hundreds of guests. You’ll also understand why designers and bakers charge what they do. You can find classes in community colleges, adult education programs, and large craft stores.

2) Floral Design

Acquire skills in floral design by taking classes that will give you knowledge and experience in handing and arranging flowers. You should also learn the different types of flowers, when they are in season and their colors and textures so you can help brides make choices that fit within their budgets. Taking classes will also teach you trends in floral design and how florists price their bouquets and arrangements. Florists sometimes run classes in their shops or in community colleges and adult education programs.

3) Food and Beverage Selection

Learn about food, beverage and catering so you have information on different types of food service, selecting menus for large numbers of guests, and selecting complementary beverages. Classes can be found at culinary academies or are part of culinary, restaurant, hotel or hospitality programs at community colleges.

4) Interior Design

Develop skills in interior design by taking classes that will teach you about color, space, style, textures, lighting and use of fabric. This will be helpful to you when working with vendors and the bride and groom to design the reception space, select the right linens and china, and properly light the room for the mood the couple wants to create. Community and art colleges have courses in interior design.

5) Sewing

It helps to know how to quickly fix last-minute rips and tears repair dropped hems. It would also be good to know how much a dress can be altered or customized if you help a bride select her wedding gown. You can usually pick up this skill from sewing classes at fabric shops or in adult education programs.

6) Wardrobe and Image Consulting

Brides, grooms, and their attendants and families may come to you for help in selecting the proper wedding day attire. You should have some basic knowledge of styles, shapes, and colors that enhance different body types. Fashion design and consultant programs in community and art colleges often have wardrobe and image consulting classes.
