Need help planning a wedding.?

November 8, 2009 - 6:17 am 5 Comments

I am suppose to be getting married this year and have absolutely no clue how to plan a wedding. I don’t know where to start because I have never even attended a wedding. I was wanting to know if anyone knew where I could get a printable checklist of the things I need to be doing for planning this wedding. Any help would be great because I have never done this sort of thing. I need all the help I can get. Thanks

A valuable website that I have used in planning my wedding was: www.theknot.com. It is absolutely free and they have a wealth of information available for the bride-to-be. Hairstyles, venues, dresses, accessories, check list, wedding ideas (budge, photos, cakes, invitations), anything you can think of for your specified location or even destination weddings they have available.

You can also try downloading a free wedding planning software. Sandal’s Resorts has a great one on there website: http://www.sandals.com/general/planner.cfm.

The Knot is a very reputable website for wedding planning. They have checklists.

The 1st thing you syould do is pick an approximate date and figure out about how many guests. set an overall budget to work with. Then start looking for a venue. Be flexible.
You may find the perfect venue, but they are booked, so maybe pick the next date available. We did not set our date in stone until we were able to find a suitable venue to accomodate.

Theweddingchannel.com is also a free site to join and they have lots of vendors/venues listed for the area you choose. It will give you a starting point and ideas.

Oh the joy of where to begin!!
It’s really easy when you start somewhere…
To answer your question, here is a checklist to reference to:
    6-12 Months

Choose the kind of wedding you will have, date and time.
Discuss the budget, and who will pay for what.
    Consider hiring a wedding coordinator.
    Make arrangements with the officiator.
Reserve the wedding and reception locations.
Select your wedding dress, veil and accessories.
Choose the bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers, and honored roles.
Have a formal black/white photo sitting for announcements.
Send announcements of your engagement to your fiancĂ©’s and your local and hometown newspapers.
Meet with the florist, photographer, caterer, videographer, and D.J. or entertainment to discuss budgets and options.
Discuss the guest list with fiancé and families.
    Plan reception music.
Contact a rental coordinator for equipment reservations.
Discuss honeymoon and reservations. (Traditionally the groom makes all the honeymoon arrangements.)
Arrange for time off work, if necessary.
Buy a wedding planner and envelopes to store brochures and notes.
Develop record-keeping system for invitations, gifts, and thank-you notes.
    4-6 Months

Plan new living arrangements and home furnishings.
Select and register wedding gifts and patterns.
    Select color scheme.
    Order dress and accessories.
Order bridesmaids’ dresses, shoes and accessories.
Contact men’s formal wear specialist for men’s attire.
    Have parents select attire.
Order invitations, announcements, programs, napkins, matchbooks, and personal stationery.
Arrange for physical examinations, dental appointments, etc.
    2 Months

Choose and order wedding bands and engraving.
    Order wedding and groom’s cakes.
    Check state/county marriage license requirements.
Plan ceremony, reception, menus, master of ceremonies, music, and timetables.
Plan rehearsal dinner, and bridesmaids’ luncheon.
Complete guest list and address invitations.
Make arrangements for lodging for out-of-town guests.
Purchase gifts for attendants and groom.
    Plan reception seating, if necessary.

But, start where you want to start… For me, I started with the fun stuff… The gowns!! Weddings are so stressful, so for me, I didn’t want to be strapped for time and stress when I was shopping for gowns when it’s supposed to be fun!!

Do you want an outside wedding? Church wedding? Elope?
Also, you want to think of colors.. If you are having any bridesmaids/groomsmen…
This is a great website to see some amazing colors go together…
    http://tastefullyentertaining.com/
Just simply type in a color in the search engine, and you will find some cool combinations…

And start googling reception venues in your local area. Once you do so, most websites will have an online menu, so you can compare prices to others… But, if not, call them, or email them and have them send you any information you need.

Like I said, when you start rolling, you will be right on track.
I have been to weddings, but still didn’t know where to even begin, or how to make this all happen… But, I did what I just told you… The internet was my tool… And I started feeling more confident…

    Good luck sweetie!!
